We Rebuilt Our Score to Count Nothing You Tell Us

By Alejandro Ojeda · Be the Answer · Another entry from holding our own product to its standard.

An AI visibility audit is only worth the trust you can place in its number — and this is Answer Optimization (AO), the practice the industry also calls AEO or GEO. So when we realized our own score was leaning on something it shouldn't, we rebuilt it.

Our free AI visibility audit ends with six questions a crawler genuinely can't answer from the outside: is your Google Business Profile claimed and complete, do you have recent reviews, is your Bing and Apple listing set up, does AI actually name you when asked. Useful questions. But there was a quiet problem in how we used the answers.

The flaw: your own answers were moving your score

Those six answers fed directly into your AO Score. Which means a business owner who was mistaken — or just feeling generous about themselves — could inflate their own grade by clicking “yes.” And our report would take that click and dress it up as an authoritative number. That's backwards. A score you can move by answering a question about yourself isn't measuring your visibility; it's measuring your optimism.

A customer flagged it in plain terms: “the answers aren't verified — what if they're mistaken or not honest?” He was right, and it's exactly the kind of thing our whole product exists to catch. So we caught it in ourselves.

The fix: the score counts only what we verify

The AO Score now counts only the checks we run and confirm ourselves — your schema, your crawlability, your kill switches, your machine-readable identity, the things a scan can actually see. Your self-reported answers still appear in the report, but in their own section, clearly labeled “you told us these — not yet verified,” and they no longer touch the number. We also stopped penalizing anything we couldn't read: if a page blocks our scan, that's marked as unread, not counted against you.

The test for any score you're handed

Here's the takeaway you can use on anyone's audit, not just ours: if the score moved because of an answer you typed about yourself, it's a mirror, not an audit. Real measurement doesn't ask you how you're doing; it checks. Ask any tool or agency that hands you a number: which parts of this did you verify, and which parts did I just tell you? The gap between those two is the difference between a report you can act on and a report that flatters you.

The unverifiable items don't vanish, of course — your Google Business Profile still matters enormously. They just move to where honesty puts them: things we confirm with your permission as part of the done-for-you work, rather than things we pretend to know from the outside.

Want the number you can actually defend? The free AI visibility audit takes about a minute, and now every point in your AO Score is something we verified — not something you told us.
