What is Answer Optimization (AO)? AO vs SEO, AEO and GEO, in plain English

By Alejandro Ojeda · Be the Answer · aoaudit.com

The definition: Answer Optimization (AO) is the practice of making your business the answer AI engines give. When a customer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, or Google AI Mode “who should I use for ___ near me,” AO is everything you do so the AI can find, verify, and recommend you. The industry also calls this AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) or GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — three names, one practice.

Search is changing shape. For twenty years the goal was a ranked list of blue links, and the discipline that won those rankings was SEO. Now a billion people use Google's AI Mode, ChatGPT recommends specific businesses by name, and AI agents can call and book on a customer's behalf. The customer doesn't scroll a list anymore — they get an answer. Usually one or two names. There is no page two of an answer.

That shift needs its own discipline. We call it Answer Optimization because that's what it literally is: optimizing to be the answer.

Two honest observations about that table:

1. AEO, GEO, and AO are substantially the same practice. AEO and GEO are the industry's technical terms; AO is the plain-English name we use. We didn't invent a new discipline — we gave the existing one a name your customers can actually say. If you search for AEO advice or GEO research, it applies here, and vice versa.

2. AO doesn't replace SEO — it sits on top of it. AI engines still crawl the web the way search engines do. A site that's invisible to Google's crawler is invisible to Gemini too. The SEO fundamentals — crawlable pages, clear structure, fast loading — are the floor. AO adds what AI engines specifically need above that floor.

What AI engines actually need from your business

This is the practical core of AO. From scanning real business websites every day at aoaudit.com, the pattern is consistent — AI engines reward businesses that are:

1. Readable by machines

Schema markup (structured data that states your name, services, prices, hours in a format AI parses directly), an llms.txt file, and crawler access for AI bots in your robots.txt. Most local businesses have none of these — in our scans, the single most common failure is a site that looks fine to humans and reads as nearly blank to a bot.

2. Verifiable across sources

AI engines cross-check. Your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business (formerly Business Connect), and Yelp should agree on your name, address, phone, and hours. Disagreement reads as unreliability, and unreliable businesses don't get recommended.

3. Answer-shaped

Customers ask AI full questions: “how much does a fade cost in Napa,” “do they take walk-ins.” Businesses that publish real answers — prices on the site, an FAQ that matches real questions, booking links a bot can follow — give the AI something to quote. Businesses that hide prices behind “call us” give it nothing.

How to check your AI visibility (free, 60 seconds)

You don't have to guess where you stand. Our free AO Audit scans your website live — schema, AI-crawler access, llms.txt, content structure, pricing and booking signals, the machine-readability checks AI engines actually run — and gives you an AO Score from 0 to 100 with your gaps ranked by impact. The score counts only what we can verify, nothing you tell us about yourself.

Common questions

Is AO just for tech companies?

The opposite. The businesses with the most to gain are local and service businesses — barbers, dentists, contractors, restaurants, wineries — because that's what customers ask AI about (“best ___ near me”), and because so few local businesses have done any of this work. The bar is low and the lane is open.

Does AO work in Spanish?

Yes — and Spanish-speaking businesses are even more underserved. We run the same audit for Spanish-language sites: empieza aquí.

What does it cost?

The scan and your AO Score are free. If you want the fixes done, every price is published plainly here — a $39 do-it-yourself playbook, $497 done-for-you, no contracts.
