AI visibility: what it is — and how to check yours free

By Alejandro Ojeda · The AO Audit · July 24, 2026

AI visibility is whether AI engines — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and the agents built on them — can find, read, verify, and recommend your business when a customer asks. It's not a feeling; it's measurable: crawler access, structured data, machine-readable content, published prices, and profiles that agree. You can check yours free in about 60 seconds.

A billion people now search with Google's AI Mode. ChatGPT recommends businesses by name and sends shoppers to their sites. When an AI answers "who's the best near me" with one or two names, being one of those names is the whole game — there is no page two of an answer. And here's the part most owners never hear: having a website doesn't mean AI can see it. We scan real business websites every week, and most of them are partly or fully invisible to the machines their customers now ask.

What AI visibility actually consists of

When an AI engine decides whether to mention your business, it isn't judging your design. It's asking four machine-answerable questions:

The machine's questionWhat it checks
Can I read you?robots.txt and llms.txt permissions, whether your content exists as text (not just JavaScript or images), indexability
Can I verify you?Schema markup (your identity in machine language), business profiles on Google, Bing, Apple and Yelp that agree on name, phone, and hours
Can I quote you?Published prices, a real FAQ, answer-shaped content — AI can only repeat facts you've made public
Can I act on you?Booking links, machine-readable contact info — what an AI agent needs to actually call or book on a customer's behalf

What real scans actually find

This isn't theoretical. Across the businesses we scan, the same failures repeat — 9 in 10 websites have no AI instructions at all, and many beautiful sites read as nearly blank pages to bots. The full ranked list, engine by engine, lives in our AI SEO scan-log report. The short version: most businesses aren't losing the AI recommendation to a better competitor — they're losing it to their own unreadable website.

The AO Score: how visibility becomes a number

The free AO Audit runs 21 automated machine-readability checks against your site, live, and scores only what it can verify — nothing you claim about yourself moves the number:

ScoreWhat it means
85+Agent-ready — AI can find, trust, and act on your business
65–84Visible, with gaps worth closing
40–64Half-invisible — machines see fragments, not a business
<40Invisible to most AI engines

Most unoptimized small-business sites land in the 40s and 50s. Ours scored 69 the first time — we published that failing grade, because a grading tool that won't grade itself in public is asking for trust it won't spend on itself.

How to check your AI visibility — free, two ways

The 60-second way

Run the free scan at aoaudit.com: enter your website, get your AO Score and your gaps ranked by impact. No account, no card.

The manual spot-checks (also free, also revealing)

Ask ChatGPT or Gemini: "What is [your business name] in [your city]?" — a wrong or empty answer means the machines haven't formed a verified picture of you. Then ask the money question: "best [what you do] in [your area]" — and see whose names come back. Finally, visit yoursite.com/robots.txt: if you've never seen that file, you've never told AI whether it's welcome.

Honest limit: no tool — ours included — can guarantee what an AI says on a given day. A visibility score measures whether machines can read, verify, and quote you; the mention itself is earned over time, which is why we re-test monthly rather than promise rankings. Anyone guaranteeing you #1 in ChatGPT is selling weather.

Fix order, if you find gaps

By leverage: open the doors (robots.txt + llms.txt) → install valid schema → claim Google, Bing, Apple and Yelp profiles → publish real prices and a real FAQ → make every profile agree. The reasoning behind that order — and where each engine actually gets its answers — is in the AI SEO report; the plain-English definitions live in what is Answer Optimization (AO)?

FAQ

What is AI visibility?

Whether AI engines can find, read, verify, and recommend your business when a customer asks. It's measurable — crawler access, schema, machine-readable content, published prices, and consistent profiles — and checkable free in about 60 seconds.

How do I check if ChatGPT can see my website?

Ask ChatGPT "What is [your business] in [your city]?" for a quick read, or run the free AO Audit for the full 21-check scan with a 0–100 score.

Is AI visibility the same as SEO?

No — SEO targets a ranked list of links; AI visibility is whether you can be the answer. SEO fundamentals help, but machines add requirements SEO never tested.

What's a good AO Score?

85+ is agent-ready. Most unoptimized sites score in the 40s–50s — fixable in weeks, not months.

How often should I re-check?

After every meaningful site change, and monthly for the AI-answer test — engines re-crawl and re-verify constantly.
